3038 - Bewitched but not Bothered nor Bewildered! (Bill Allen)
Course Description
Instructor: Bill Allen
Similar to our recent course on "Oh! What a Beautiful Morning," we will study another American Songbook classic sung in a quite different vein, Rodgers & Hart's "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" introduced in the 1940 Broadway musical PAL JOEY and featured in the 1957 Hollywood film of the same name. We will look at its lyrical and thematic content and important recording history. We will also discuss its cultural and social aspects and some possible contemporary criticism. If you join us, we think you will be musically bewitched and not culturally bothered nor intellectually bewildered.
Bio: Bill has degrees in history, English, and librarianship from the University of Louisville, University of London (Royal Holloway College), and Emory University. He taught at institutions of higher learning in Kentucky, Indiana, and Georgia before beginning a two-decade career in research and reference in the CNN Library. Now retired, he says teaching courses relating in various ways to his former academic studies give him great pleasure and satisfaction. He has been doing so here at OLLI since 2008.
