Course Description

Learn the ins and outs of the new Georgia psychiatric advance directive law!

Outpatient provider support is the number one determining factor for if an individual gets a psychiatric advance directive (PAD). Students will become acquainted with Georgia laws surrounding psychiatric advance directives as well as their responsibilities for treating a patient with a PAD. This course will cover what a PAD is, when they are useful, why individuals with PADs have improved prognosis, and issues facing PAD advocacy and implementation. By the end of this course, students will be able to complete their own PAD and understand how to employ supported decision making to assist individuals in completing their own.

This course will give an overview of PADs across the nation. However, we will be focusing on Georgia PAD laws.

  • Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia for 2 CORE hours
  • Georgia Society for Clinical Social Work for 2 CORE Hours
  • Georgia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy for 2 CORE hours

Learner Outcomes

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe what a PAD is and why this piece of legislation is being added in a growing number of states across the country
  • Describe the situations in which consent may be revoked for an individual and when PADs become active
  • Explain what a PAD can and cannot do
  • Explain issues facing individuals attempting to use PADs as well what methods individuals use to inform providers about PAD status
  • Explain why an individual may want to appoint an agent, or why they may not wish to by employing knowledge of Georgia specific policies and laws
  • Describe situations in which PADs may be an alternative to conservatorship
  • Outline protocols and responsibilities for providers treating an individual with a PAD
  • Describe issues surrounding provider education, community education, and implementation of PADs and understand current advocacy efforts
  • Complete a psychiatric advance directive
  • Employ supported decision making to assist an individual in completing the Georgia state PAD
