Course Description

Instructor: Peter Campos

Hawaii! Just the name passionately evokes paradise, tropical bliss, and soulful calmness. But there is much more to these islands than what tourists typically experience. Last year I presented a short OLLI class on travel to Hawaii; this class builds on that class, and presents Hawaii as more than a vacation destination. We will examine how the archipelago developed, its ancient and contemporary history, the biodiversity of the islands, and the myriad cultures that shape its identity. We will explore geological and cultural features of the major islands, and learn about key recreation activities at each. I will be using photographs and videos I took during my trip to Oahu and the Big Island this past September to illustrate some of these, and there will be treats available to those in the classroom section! Aloha!
