Course Description

Instructor:  Denise Raynor

Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, is a celebration of freedom from enslavement. June 19th, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, seems like a miscarriage of justice. Why weren't the enslaved in Texas liberated earlier? The course examines the Emancipation Proclamation and the path to freedom that Juneteenth celebrates.

Instructor Bio: Denise Raynor MD, MPH, emerita of the Emory University School of Medicine, specialized in prenatal diagnosis and management of high risk pregnancy at Grady Hospital. In retirement, she has intensified her focus on healthcare disparities and inequities across all aspects of our society based on skin color. She has given presentations at Emory University Emeritus College, taught courses at OLLI at Emory and is currently researching a book on implicit racial bias in medical education.
