Course Description

Instructor: George deMan

Deep-thinking mathematicians from the mystical Pythagoras of ancient Greece who emitted oracles from behind a curtain a la the Wizard of Oz to the hermetic Grothendieck who died in 2014 penniless and almost forgotten, these receivers of an almost-religious insight often changed the course of history, or science at least, and were either revered or deemed off-kilter by their peers and followers. The course will be broadly discursive without being didactic, and no math or knowledge of it are required.

Bio: George is a published poet, essayist, and sculptor - - and has taught all three as interactive courses. His career was in advertising, but his major accomplishments are in the area of cultural developments: A Founder of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Co-chairman of Emory's MARBL Board, Pres. of Out of Hand Theater, and Friends of Emory Forests. He lives near Emory where he has solo maintenance of several acres of pristine forest, travels widely, continues to publish, and is a Teaching Consultant for Emory. George has taught numerous science courses for OLLI, and studied ecology at Berkeley's College of Environmental Design.
