Course Description

Instructor: John Bayne

Opera was born in Florence around 1600, a result of intellectual discussions in the Florentine Camerata, regarding how music and drama should be combined into an ideal art form. The earliest operas usually dealt with classical subjects, and obeyed strict rules about format and performance style. The idea spread throughout Europe. The course traces the development of the art form up through the operas of Mozart. Eight one-hour sessions include opera videos.
