Course Description
Instructor: Liza Davis
Starts: Wednesday, October 6, 8 weeks
Time: 10-11AM
James Baldwin, Doris Lessing, Naguib Mahfouz, Yasunari Kawabata, Leslie Marmon Silko, Jorge Luis Borges, Flannery O’Connor, Alice Munro—these are masterful writers whose stories have captivated readers for decades, broadening their understanding of different cultures and ethnicities. Students will read and discuss a sampling of each author’s short story in biographical and historical context, looking, too, at its technical elements: plot, narrative arc, characterization, symbolism, and point of view, for example. While the instructor will do some lecturing, comments and questions will be more than welcome.
