Course Description
Instructors: Judy Byrd and Marty BennettThis class presents a practical, interactive approach to increase skill in discussing different views on politics and issues -- civilly and respectfully. Our goal is not to change other’s opinions but to listen, learn and understand their points of view. Over the seven sessions, the instructors and guest lecturers will facilitate open inquiry, viewpoint diversity and constructive disagreement. Class discussions will include: causes of contemporary divisiveness and intolerance; Jonathan Haidt’s research on liberal and conservative values; broad sources for factual research on issues; best practices for friendly, informative conversations; in-depth practice with the power of words and constructive approaches to discussions of issues.
