Instructor: Wendy VenetThe Confederate carving on Stone Mountain is the largest tribute to the Confederacy anywhere. This class considers the origins and evolution of the carving, the roles played by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the KKK, and the changing political dynamics in the state of Georgia. This presentation also considers the public unveiling ceremonies of the carving in 1924, 1928, and 1970, each of which reveals significant lessons about the eras in which they occurred. It concludes with a discussion of current debate over the mountain carving.
