The First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution broadly protects freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of religion. We will discuss how the U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted the First Amendment on various issues including: fighting words and hate speech, criticism of political and public figures, limitations on campaign and political speech, corporate speech (Citizens United), publication of government information and secrets, education and restrictions on speech, the applicability of general government regulation to religious conduct, and government support of religious conduct or ideas.
