In 1894, Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, was accused of being a spy for Germany. Although the charges were fabricated, Dreyfus was convicted and imprisoned for 10 years. This dramatic case polarized the French and inflamed passion, range, nationalism, and anti-Semitism. Only when Emile Zola wrote J’Accuse did the tide begin to turn in Dreyfus’ favor. The hateful, explosive, anti-Semitism of most of the French during the Dreyfus Affair left Theodore Herzel to despair of Jews ever finding a homeland in European countries, despite their attempt to assimilate. This fact became the impetus for State of Israel. We will read The Affair - The Case of Alfred Dreyfus (Bredin) to understand this vivid and fascinating slice of history that foreshadowed the beginning of the Holocaust.
