Course Description

Instructor: Dorothy Fletcher

The subject of landscape for its own sake, not simply as a setting for narrative scenes, is relatively recent in the history of Western art; it is not until the Renaissance that artists began to depict pure landscapes.  This course will be a wide-ranging exploration of the landscape genre, from the 15th c to the early 20th c, in Europe and the USA, and will include outstanding works by artists Brueghel, Ruisdael, Poussin, Turner, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, the Hudson River School, Sargent, and others.
