This class will read the book The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad by Harrison E. Salisbury. For 900 days beginning in 1941 - two and a half years without letup - the city of Leningrad suffered siege. During that time as many people died in Leningrad as the entire war losses suffered by the United States in the whole of its history - nearly a million and a half. Harrison Salisbury spent 25 years studyng diaries, memoirs and archives, corresponding with and interviewing survivors. Reviewers have said this book is, "Worthy to stand alongside War and Peace." The class will use documentaries and lecture along with the book.

The book is also available at the library. We are also suggesting that students might want to read The City of Thieves by David Benioff, a fictional story about the siege.
