Course Description
Instructor: George deMan with guest speakers
In the immediate post-WWII period, and for roughly 20 years, NYC stole leadership of the art world from Paris, that of the theater world from London, arguably led music -- especially Avant-garde, jazz and pop; took over couture from Paris/Milan, and dance from Russia. Movies were of course still mostly made on the West Coast, but TV was making inroads and NYC was that capital, as well. General design was more dispersed, but for architecture and a lot of household goods, NYC again led the field. The course will survey the leading trends, argue the cuttingedge agendas, and introduce you to or confirm with you the leading names, schools and institutions.
