Course Description

Instructor: John Bayne

With a full orchestra, elaborate sets and costumes, high (and low) drama, and -- most exotic of all -- singers, opera is a synthesis of all the arts. It can be intimidating, though, sung in different languages by an international cast of men and women who don't always look their parts, making sounds that are an acquired taste, in front of a well-dressed, snooty audience. What's not to love? The course includes an historical overview of the art form; stories and music of the principal Italian, German, and French operas; great singers of the past and present; famous opera houses; modern operas; and odds and ends. Get your gowns and tuxedos ready and prepare to shout, "Bravo!"
