Course Description

Instructor: Michael McDavid

Of the five “cradles of civilization in the ancient world only one was in the Western hemisphere. This was the Mesoamerican civilization that began in what’s today southern Mexico and Guatemala. The most advanced of the many Mesoamerican cultures was that of the Maya. About 4,000 years ago the Maya people began to create a complex, sophisticated civilization that culminated in the construction of great ceremonial centers with towering stone temples, the evolution of the only true writing system among peoples in the Americas, and the development of sophisticated agricultural and transportation systems. In this course we will survey the beginnings of Maya civilization, the features that distinguished it from surrounding cultures, the causes of the collapse of the Classic Maya world in the 10th century, and the Spanish conquest in the 16th century that finished it off.
