From early May 1864, when Major General William T. Sherman's armies marched into Georgia, the Atlanta Campaign evolved into a series of maneuvers, as Sherman continually attempted to outflank his Confederate adversary, General Joseph E. Johnston. Penetrating deeper into Georgia, the campaign became one of entrenching, as the soldiers on both sides favored their spades as much as their muskets. The Confederates occupied a series of military lines in Cobb County during the month of June. After the death of Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk on June 14, Johnston retracted his force, eventually forming along the Kennesaw Mountain Line. Sherman, fearing complacency among his troops decided to attack! We will visit the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, where stops will include Big Kennesaw Mountain and Cheatham Hill - scene of the heaviest fighting during the June 27, 1864 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. OLLI Instructor Michael Shaffer will lead the tour. Registration fee is $30, which covers the cost of motorcoach transportation. Lunch is scheduled for David Poe's BBQ (lunch is on your own).
