Instructor: Herbert Benario, PhD

“It is truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.� So begins Pride and Prejudice, with one of the most famous opening sentences in English literature. We shall read this book and two others, Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion.
Herbert Herbert W. Benario received his Ph.D. in Classics from The Johns Hopkins University in 1951, served in the US Army for two years, and then taught at Columbia University and Sweet Briar College before coming to Emory in 1960, where he served for 27 years. He received Emeritus status in 1987. In 1990 he was Fulbright Professor at the University of Passau, Germany, and was Visiting Professor at Brigham Young University in 1999. He has remained active in the classical world throughout his retirement.
