Course Description
Instructor: John BayneSouthern Literary Tombstones (two presentations)
The literature of the American south is awash in cemetery scenes. Noteworthy episodes appear in the works of William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Thomas Wolfe, James Agee, and others. The presentations focus on writers’ and poets’ grave markers in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Mississippi, with a few more besides.
Atlanta Cemeteries (two presentations)
Oakland Cemetery is appropriately considered to be one of the city’s outstanding resources, combining aspects of a sculpture and architecture museum, research facility, arboretum, park, and event space. But other Atlanta cemeteries are certainly worth digging into. These presentations discuss the landscapes and occupants of other historic cemeteries, including Westview (1884), South-View (1886), and Greenwood.
