Course Description

Instructor: Bill Fletcher

Fables are not just for children. These fables were intended to teach princes how to be kings. At one level entertaining animal stories and at another Machiavellian advice, they became one of Islamic literature’s most illustrated and popular books of the medieval and early modern eras. They were translated into all the European languages, where they joined Aesop, tales like Reynard the Fox, and La Fontaine’s illustrated Fables (1668). We will discuss many of the stories, see how they were illustrated, and note the uses to which they were put and their current political relevance.
