Course Description
Instructor: Liza DavisIn this course, we’ll examine poems with a variety of styles and themes, by an array of diverse and distinguished poets. Our emphasis will be on the elements of good poems, with a foray into comparing them with a few bad counterparts . Some of the selections will be simple lyrics, easily explicated, while others will offer a more challenging experience. Lectures will address each author’s background, as well as additional information pertinent to understanding each poem (e.g., historical references, important poetic elements, etc.). Whether the poems we study are serious and philosophical or funny and irreverent, they will be neither long nor tedious. And they will be calculated to enlighten and entertain.
