Course Description

Instructor: Rona Simmons

The number of World War II veterans who walk among us is dwindling. When they leave they will take their stories with them; and their experience, their perspective, and everything they learned will be lost. Rona Simmons, the instructor, had to poke and prod her father, a World War II fighter pilot, to tell his story. He like many other World War II veterans had never spoken about their experiences, thinking they had nothing to say. Simmons thought differently. Over a two year period she interviewed dozens of veterans and captured nineteen of their stories in her book, The Other Veterans of World War II: Stories from Behind the Lines. She came away with a commitment to help document other veterans stories, whether World War II or any of America’s wars. In this course, Simmons will provide tips and techniques to discover untold stories and to capture them for future generations—whether in the form of blog posts, articles, or full length books.

Topics include: finding a war, a topic, and a veteran, conducting your initial research, outlining your project, preparing for an interview, capturing the interview, and drafting the story.
