This course will examine the early years of the American Civil War from the Secession Crisis through early January 1863. Topics discussed will be the causes of the secession, the strategic importance of the Border States and Union efforts to hold them, the Anaconda plan, Union naval operations along the Mississippi River, the Union victories at Forts Henry and Donelson, the Battle of Shiloh, the Confederate Heartland Offensive of 1862, and the battles of Perryville and Stones River (Murfreesboro).
