Course Description

Instructors: George deMan and Jill Parks

American Impressionism is the better known and documented style and movement, but borrowing from the German, Belgian, Dutch and Scandinavian beginnings American artists like Burchfield, preeminently, Marin, Hartley, Okeeffe, Glackens, Gottleib, Guston, Still, Frankenthaler, Pollack, Louis, Dove, Rothko, Mitchell et al. created a uniquely American idiom in Color/field, Abstract Expressionist, minimalist and other highly person styles. Flamboyant, rash and controversial artists like Jackson Pollack and quit recently Jean-Mitchell Basquiat gave the movement drama as well as lasting work of a classic order. The distinction between impressionism and expressionism will be explored and individual artists given art critical as well as cultural-relevance treatments.
