Course Description

Instructor: Sally Kann In the 19th century, American classical composers began discarding traditional European models. Finding inspiration in the pioneering spirit of the Wild West, in small-town New England, in jazz temples and churches, and even in Tin Pan Alley, composers developed an original, recognizable sound that we now think of as ‘American’. We will explore these many and varied influences through the great works of Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, George Gershwin, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, John Adams, Phillip Glass, as well as the works of composers who are not so well known, including Elliot Carter and Milton Babbit.
