Course Description

Instructor: Michael McDavid, MA

By the end of the 18th century, Western Europe’s race for colonies seemed to be over as the continent wrestled with other issues such as political upheaval and the Industrial Revolution. By the mid-19th century the race heated up once more as European nations competed with one another to gobble up land and territories, primarily in Africa and Asia, untouched by the earlier wave of colonialism. In this course, we will examine the motivations and differences in 19th century colonialism, look at the nations and territories most involved, and see how the older colonialism would morph into a newer imperialism.

This course is designed as a stand-alone. It is not necessary to have taken the Age of Discovery class offered in the fall long session. Class only 3 Weeks
