Course Description
Emory Continuing Education's 20 week Online Health & Wellness Coaching Certificate Program prepares students to utilize evidence-based relational & behavior change skills & approaches, in a variety of settings, which help improve health & wellbeing for individuals, groups & organizations. This course is a hybrid certificate combining live online & self-paced curriculum coupled with weekly coaching practice sessions. A development-focused evaluation & individual feedback from faculty who are experienced health & wellness coaches will add to the value of the experience. Emphasis is placed on the foundational knowledge & practical skills of the coaching process standards & competencies of the National Board of Health & Wellness Coaches (NBHWC).
Note: Students wishing to withdraw from this course must make a request in writing at least ten (10) business days prior to the course start date in order to receive a refund. No refunds will be provided after that time. Transfers to future sections will require a fee as specified in the course Terms & Conditions.

- Practice coaching skills one-on-one demonstrating mindful/client-centered listening, open inquiry, effective variations of reflections, action planning & goal setting
- Describe/utilize communication techniques that support enhanced client motivation & facilitate the client's desired & lasting behavior change
- Identify/discuss fundamentals of positive psychology which commonly impact client motivation & goal attainment
- Identify/practice assessing the stages of change & common effective coaching techniques for various stages
- Apply mindfulness practices to their own coaching presence/model or coach them with clients when appropriate
- Recognize common signs, symptoms, evidence-based management & the impact of holistic care in chronic diseases
- Describe/understand the guidelines for evidence-based complimentary care & lifestyle behaviors that impact human health & wellness including exercise, nutrition, tobacco use, substance abuse, stress management, sleep & social connections
- Describe settings where health coaches work & illustrate a clear understanding of the field & scope of practice
- Recognize/effectively make appropriate referrals for client needs/services outside their own scope of practice
- Summarize components/importance of legal factors in coaching to include confidentiality, record keeping, HIPAA considerations, licensure & familiarity with differing local regulations
