Course Description

This course is an elective in the Paralegal Certificate but may also be taken as a standalone course. This course is offered once per year.

This course provides paralegal students with the terms, concepts, and practical applications of family, employment and litigation-based immigration law. Topics include client intake and database/case management, as well as highly pertinent humanitarian/immigration issues such as U visas for trafficking victims and refugee/asylum law. Basic principles as to how immigration law practices can best serve their clients will also be discussed.

Learner Outcomes

After this class, you will be able to:

  • Describe and perform the basic tasks of client intake in an immigration setting
  • Explain the basic principles of how a general immigration practice serves its clients
  • Complete a family-based adjustment of status package before USCIS
  • Distinguish among a family, employment and litigation-based immigration and demonstrate paralegal skills specific to assisting attorneys in those areas
  • Explain the impact of current events and hot topics on immigration law practice
