Course Description

Instructor: Robert Ratonyi

Holocaust Childhood – Wounds That Never Heal is a 55-minute, three-part presentation that uses Robert’s lived experience as a Jewish child in Budapest to illuminate the larger moral lessons of the Holocaust. The Introduction places the Holocaust within the wider history of 20th century genocides and connects its origins to contemporary events, including October 7, 2023. The central narrative, drawn from Chapter 1 in his published book From Darkness into Light – My Journey from Nazism, Fascism, and Communism to Freedom, recounts Robert’s survival from 1938 to 1945 through bombings, starvation, the Arrow Cross terror, the ghettos, and the loss of fourteen family members. The Conclusion returns to the questions posed at the beginning: how genocide becomes possible, and how future genocides might be prevented. Robert reflects on human nature, the thin line between good and evil, the danger of apathy, the necessity of strictly enforced laws, and the unique role of America’s founding documents in safeguarding liberty.

Bio:

Robert Ratonyi was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1938 and survived the Holocaust despite both parents being deported to concentration camps. Following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, he escaped to Austria and immigrated to Canada, where he began rebuilding his life. He later earned engineering degrees from MIT and a management degree from Drexel University.

Robert enjoyed a successful career with major corporations, including GE, Exxon, and Xerox, before establishing his own mergers and acquisitions business in Atlanta in 1986. He also assisted Hungary's privatization efforts through USAID following the fall of communism.

Now semi-retired, Robert shares his experiences as a Holocaust survivor with students and community organizations through the Breman Museum and Georgia Commission on the Holocaust. He and his wife, also a Holocaust survivor, live in Atlanta and actively support the arts, education, and Jewish organizations.
