Course Description

Staying Strong and Independent: What the Science Shows (and What to Do About It)

Summer Info Session "Staying Strong and Independent: What the Science Shows (and What to Do About It)"

This session explores the growing body of research on strength training and its role in supporting healthy aging. Participants will learn how strength impacts mobility, balance, metabolic health, and overall independence, along with practical ways to incorporate it into daily life.

We will also examine what happens to the body as we age, including the natural loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), and discuss simple, research-backed strategies to address it—particularly through strength training and nutrition.

Additional benefits, including the connection between strength training and cognitive health, will be introduced to provide a more complete picture of how movement supports overall well-being.

The session includes a brief, guided class demonstration to help participants experience how strength training can be adapted for different levels and abilities, followed by time for questions and discussion.
