Course Description

Instructor: Jay Miller

Did you know that James Joyce, Anton Chekhov, and Henry James—literary geniuses all—wrote short stories of love and heartbreak? They did, and those stories rank among their best. In this course we will explore them in depth, taking one or two stories per week. As with my other courses, this will be a discussion-based class, which is often the best way to understand what the author is trying to do.

The stories will be available online for participants.

Bio: My background is as a Duke graduate and lawyer for over forty years. My wife and I moved to Atlanta in 2022 to be near our son and grandchildren. I have taught OLLI classes on five different Faulkner novels at Duke University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I have studied Faulkner for years and attended a Faulkner conference in Oxford, Mississippi. Also, I have taught OLLI classes on Phillip Roth novels and works of southern writer Peter Taylor. Over the past five years, I have participated in an online Great Books course of study through the University of Chicago. The reason I do this is because I love the classics and want to impart that feeling to others.
