Course Description

Fine print, bold promises, and sneaky tricks lurk in today’s marketplace. This three-session course explores how government regulates the marketplace and emerging trends that affect consumers. Topics may include privacy issues in everyday life, advertising and influence in social media (including sponsored content and reviews), and predatory financial practices, such as junk fees, debt collection, and payday loans, with room to explore other timely issues.

The format is conversational and interactive, with discussion and short scenarios that uncover the tricks, traps, and surprises hiding in everyday transactions.

This class meets March 3, 10 & 24th. 

Bio Marla Tepper is a New York City attorney with decades of experience in civil rights and consumer protection. She served as a New York State Assistant Attorney General, an Assistant U.S. Attorney investigating and litigating housing, employment, disability, discrimination, and voting rights cases, and as Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel of the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs. In that role, she oversaw consumer protection litigation, drafted regulations, and implemented legislation. She also served as General Counsel to two large
