Course Description

This class will present five formidable women who faced challenges to make lasting contributions to the arts, education, and civil rights. You will learn about Viola Luizzo, a civil rights activist who was murdered; Hattie McDaniel, the first African American to win an Oscar, but she was so much more; Mary McLeod Bethune, an educator who laid the foundation for the civil rights movement; Fannie Lou Hamer, organized voter registration while being harassed, shot at, and threatened; and Misty Copeland, the first African American Woman to be promoted to principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre, after facing years of discrimination
