Course Description

Instructor: Robert Pawlicki

Loneliness is dangerous. We are all lonely at one time or another, but prolonged loneliness is another matter. And right now, clinical loneliness has reached epidemic and pernicious levels. Psychologist Robert Pawlicki shares the differences between loneliness and time alone, the pervasiveness of loneliness in the United States, the evolution of loneliness and why loneliness has become so common. The news is not all bad. Science has shown that clinical loneliness is preventable, and imbedded loneliness can be overcome. As we age, loneliness is perhaps our most formidable obstacle. A true understanding of its harm and the means of protecting ourselves from its damage is a very good investment.

Bio: Robert Pawlicki, Ph.D., is a former associate professor (State University of New York at Oswego) and full professor at the West Virginia University Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He has been licensed as a clinical psychologist in New York, West Virginia and Ohio. Robert has written three books related to happiness and well-being and has had roughly 150 newspaper opinion page columns published throughout the United States.
