Course Description

Instructor: Kathy Wright-Starr

Come and learn the method and practice of Zentangle®. Zentangle will help you discover a way to put aside your daily distractions and find your own creative spirit. What is Zentangle? Zentangle is a meditational art form that is easy to learn. It is a relaxing method of drawing beautiful images from structured patterns. Each structured pattern is created with deliberate strokes, one line at a time. The materials are simple - pen, paper, and pencil. Too many times we say we can’t, but the reality is that "anything is possible, one thing at a time, one line at a time." We will complete at least 2 paper tiles
and learn at least 8 tangles before the class is done! (What are paper tiles? What are tangles? Come to this class and find out the answers to these questions!

There are no mistakes in Zentangle - only amazing creations that flow from a place within produced one line at a time. We will review the basics of Zentangle that you learned in the Introduction to Zentangle class, using black ink on white tiles. Then we will learn to use white ink on black tiles adding to our repertoire of tangles. Join us and find that place within where creations are waiting to be born.

Materials are provided by the instructor.

Bio: I grew up singing, dancing and making things.  These creative endeavors have supported me throughout my whole life.  Yes, I hold multiple academic degrees, but my creative endeavors enriched and provided a foundation and repertoire of skills that girded all my work as a teacher.  I began teaching deaf and hard of hearing students in 1973.  I spent 31+ years as a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing before I retired December 1, 2012.  My father had dementia.  My mother had post-polio syndrome.  My father’s advancing dementia required more support and supervision than my mother was able to provide.  In 2005 my parents moved into our home.  My father died in March of 2006.  My mother died in January of 2019. The physical demands of teaching and care-taking were exhausting physically and mentally.  I was introduced to Zentangle® by some friends.  I have always been drawn to art classes.  Hearing that there was a meditative art form, and that a friend was teaching it sounded like blessed relief!  Needless to say, I loved Zentangle® from my very first class.  I continued to take classes, but promised myself that I would train to become a Certified Zentangle® Teacher (CZT) when I retired and now I am.  What a wonderful experience it has been— and continues to be!
