3277 - Pragmatism: The Philosophy of Dewey and Pierse (Gene Schallern)
Course Description
Instructor: Gene Schallern
The first American philosophy, Pragmatism, grew out of the vicissitudes of the Civil War and cultural influences of slavery, Darwinism, capitalism, labor unions, German philosophers… Emphasis will be on the philosophy of Pragmatism, but there are also historical and psychological aspects to consider as well. If you enjoy discussing ideas, this is the class for you. For reference material we will be using: The Metaphysical Club, a Pulitzer Prize-winning book delineating the philosophy and history of Pragmatism.
Bio: Gene has over 30 years of senior management experience in Silicon Valley high tech industries. He has taught in college, secondary, university and industrial environments. He is a student of Objectivism for 45 years including speaking at Objectivist Conferences. He earned a double major in Physics and Math with a minor in Philosophy. Gene earned his master’s in Physics from Marquette University.
