Course Description

Instructor: Jane Herzig

Mary Cassatt was commissioned to paint an immense 60' by 15' mural that was displayed in the tympanum of the Woman's Building in Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition from May through October 1893. Once the exhibition closed, the painting disappeared. This session is a presentation of the piece, based on a few black and white photos, descriptions that give a sense of the mural's color scheme, and an 1893 color lithograph of a portion of the mural's central portion.
