Course Description

Instructor: Jay Miller

The class will involve an active reading and discussion of what many critics consider to be William Faulkner's greatest novel. I use the word "discussion" intentionally. I may lecture briefly, but the bulk of our time will be spent exchanging thoughts about what we read for that week. I will post questions in advance to aid each week's discussion.

Bio: My background is as a Duke graduate and lawyer for over forty years. My wife and I moved to Atlanta in 2022 to be near our son and grandchildren. I led an Emory OLLI class on William Faulkner's novel Absalom, Absaiom last fall and have taught OLLI classes on five different Faulkner novels at Duke University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). I have studied Faulkner for years and attended a Faulkner conference in Oxford, Mississippi. Also, I have taught OLLI classes on Phillip Roth novels and works of southern writer Peter Taylor at Duke and UWM. Over the past six years, I have participated in an online Great Books course of study through the University of Chicago. The reason I do this is because I love the classics (Faulkner in particular) and want to impart that feeling to others
