Course Description

Beginning around 1500 Western Europeans begin exploring first Africa then the New World, expanding their political power, exporting their cultures, and exploiting the indigenous peoples they encountered. This course will survey the evolution of European colonialism around the world, concentrating on the motivations for colonialism, the Atlantic slave trade, the differences in the colonial empires, and how in the 19th century colonialism would morph into imperialism.
