In this course we will study the major battles of the Civil War in the Eastern Theater from the Secession Crisis through the end of 1862. Topics will include the struggle over Fort Sumter, the Western Virginia Campaign, the first Battle of Bull Run, Jackson’s Valley Campaign of 1862, the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, the Battle of Cedar Mountain, the second Battle of Bull Run, the 1862 Confederate invasion of Maryland, the Battle of Antietam, and Fredericksburg. We will also discuss the oftenoverlooked significance of naval warfare along the Atlantic Seaboard.
